Departed Fathers was written for Father’s Day and specifically to remember my own father who died some years ago. I wanted something that was reflective and sombre without being depressing. This is a beautiful composition for full choir and orchestra, although the choir is deliberately ambiguous on the lyrics. It gives the impression they are singing maybe a latin verse but the lyrics are vague enough to not be tied to anything specific. The result is a deep intensity which is reflective and inspirational. The combination of a rich, full choir and the lush, sumptuous strings makes the hairs stand up on your neck! I think it’s one of the most emotional pieces I’ve written!
