Traditional Vietnamese music is heavily influenced by traditional Chinese music. Classical Vietnamese music was played in shrines and temples to honour the gods. It was also played in the royal court to respect the emperor or empress and the country. Modern music in Vietnam has a westernised influence and has evolved into new genres like V-pop, Heavy metal and Rock. These genres have evolved to be big in Vietnam since the introduction of Rock and Roll by the American soldiers during the Vietnam war.
